2009 National Park Visitation

From our friends at NAARP:

Despite economic downturn, Americans and foreign visitors flocked to our national parks in 2009

Ten million more Americans and foreign tourists visited the nation’s national parks last year than in 2008, a 3.9 percent increase that marked the fifth busiest year ever for the National Park System, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced today.

At Home with Horace

Breeze Hill, Harrisburg, PA

My list of conservation heroes is lengthy, and is still growing. Rothrock, Dock, Pinchot, Roosevelt, and Carson all have their special place on my list. Another name there is J. Horace McFarland.

Most of you will not recognize the name, I feel certain. McFarland, from Harrisburg PA, defines the word polymath. A nationally famous rosarian, among the founders of the American Civic Association, proponent of the “City Beautiful” movement, savior of Niagara Falls, father of the National Park Service, and publisher of seed catalogs (and the first few years of Audubon magazine) were among his varied accomplishments. For those who would like to know more about McFarland, information is available here on the web.

McFarland lived in Harrisburg, PA, along with other conservation luminaries such as Mira Lloyd Dock. In 1909 McFarland moved into what is now Bellevue Park. His home there, Breeze Hill, is in the process of being restored.

PA Wilds Bugle Boys

A few minutes ago I checked the outdoor thermometer – 102 degrees. This is the point in summer when I feel like a deflated tire with barely enough pressure to wobble home. The Texas Hill Country is accommodating in winter (not to mention spring and fall), but who wants to wait for winter? I need a respite, a break from this Austin blast furnace.

Kansas Wetlands and Wildlife Scenic Byway

GATCO’s parent company, Fermata, works with scenic byways, heritage areas, recreational trails, birding and wildlife trails, and other types of recreation and tourism programs around the globe. Many of our projects, particularly in the U.S., extend over many years. These extended efforts give us a chance to see and know an area beneath that which a traveler might experience during a brief overnight stay. In truth, through these projects we get to know a region’s soul.

I first visited Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira NWR (in north central Kansas) in January 2001. Cris Collier had invited me to visit to discuss the idea of developing a nature tourism strategy for the region. Nearly a decade later, working closely with Cris (Great Bend CVB), Janet Crane (Barton County) and many other partners (such as Fort Hayes State University, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, and the Kansas Department of Transportation), we can collectively boast of a new Kansas Wetlands Center at Cheyenne Bottoms, a new federal scenic byway (Wetlands and Wildlife), a new raptor center in Great Bend, and a renewed pride on the part of local residents and communities in this special part of the Great Plains.

For more information, and to see the latest enhancements completed by Fermata for both Great Bend and the scenic byway, go to www.visitgreatbend.com and www.kansaswetlandsandwildlifescenicbyway.com
